Tesco, a UK supermarket chain, has declared a substantial 9.1 per cent wage boost for its store employees. The decision will elevatate their hourly remuneration from £11.02 ($13.98) to £12.02.

This new adjustment, set to be implemented from April 2024, is the outcome of negotiations with the trade union USDAW and places Tesco’s pay scale above the UK’s Real Living Wage.

This pay revision represents an unprecedented investment exceeding £300 million in hourly employee compensation. Building on previous increments, Tesco has raised the hourly pay of its store staff by a cumulative 26 per cent since April 2022, translating to a financial commitment surpassing £750 million.

In addition to these pay enhancements, Tesco is also fortifying its support for employee well-being and familial responsibilities. For instance, the supermarket chain is extending paternity leave to an industry-leading six weeks at full pay and broadening the maximum sick pay entitlement to 18 weeks for eligible employees.

Furthermore, the company has bolstered family leave policies, providing 26 weeks of fully-paid maternity, adoption and kinship leave.

Since April 2023, Tesco has introduced various employee benefits, such as a virtual GP service and the right to request flexible working from day one of employment.  Furthermore, its workforce enjoys additional perks such as a Colleague Clubcard discount of up to 15 per cent, complimentary food in in-store canteens, and access to a pay advance scheme.

In February 2024, Tesco introduced a novel retail apprenticeship initiative, aiming to support young individuals, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, in launching their careers.

Moreover, the chain is instating a London Allowance area with an hourly pay rate of £13.15 for stores within the capital’s orbital motorway, the M25.
