The first ever job fair meant for the benefit of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or intersex (LGBTI) community in the country, was organised in Bengaluru, where about 350 candidates registered and over 250 received job offers from various multinational companies.
The organisations that participated in the fair included big names, such as Intel, Goldman Sachs, Uber, PayPal, Lowe’s, JP Morgan, Deutsche Bank, Accenture and American Express.
The candidates were offered not just entry-level and support jobs but also positions that required experience.
The fair was organised by Bengaluru-based consultancy, Pride Circle.
Owing to the stigma associated with being part of the community, the turnout was much lower than expected in a country where unemployment has been a major issue for years, especially for members of the LGBTQ community.
Job fairs in India usually attract thousands of applications — way more than the number of positions offered. In fact, a look at the concerned websites will prove that more than 10 million people are seeking jobs for about 386,000 government vacancies.
Uber, which was one of the participating companies proudly changed all its route maps in Bengaluru to rainbow colours on the day of the fair, to announce its support to the LGBTI community. The Company has been known for its commitment to creating a work environment that promotes equality in every which way.
It is time for others to follow suit.
