Jabil, a supplier of Apple will be setting up an electronics-manufacturing facility in Trichy, which will cost about Rs. 2000 crore. The plant will help create jobs for 5,000 people in Tiruchirapalli.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has reportedly been entered into by representatives of Jabil and a delegation from Tamil Nadu, in the presence of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, who is currently in the US.
Tamil Nadu already has Foxconn, Pegatron, Tata Electronics and Corning, all Apple suppliers, operating their plants from the state.
Jabil is a supplier to Cisco, HP and other big names as well. With this investment, Trichy will be added to the list of electronics facilities in Tamil Nadu, after Hosur and Sriperumbudur.
The Trichy plant and investment by Jabil does not come as a surprise because Apple has been steadily moving its manufacturing activities out of China.
Rockwell Automation is also investing Rs 666 crore in Kanchipuram, which will generate jobs for about 365 locals. An agreement has also been entered into with Autodesk, which will provide skilling to youth and provide a much-needed push to MSMEs and startups in Tamil Nadu.
In April 2024, Rockwell, the global industrial automation and digital-transformation company, had announced plans to open its manufacturing facility in Chennai, India. The 98,000-square-foot facility was aimed at helping Rockwell build a more resilient, agile and sustainable supply chain in the Asia Pacific region and around the globe.
Chennai is an attractive location for investors given its proximity to the port and the availability of talent.
