In the heart of Hyderabad’s tech and healthcare ecosystem, Evernorth Health Services, the pharmacy, care, and benefits solutions arm of Cigna, is taking a bold step forward. The company’s new Global Capability Centre (GCC) is more than just an operational expansion; it’s an opportunity to tap into India’s wealth of talent and innovation. With plans to hire 1,000 employees in its initial phase, Evernorth aims to make this centre a cornerstone of its global operations.

“Hyderabad offers the perfect combination of talent, infrastructure, and innovation,” says Yadhu Kishore Nandikolla, HR Director, Evernorth Health Services India. “Our decision to establish a GCC here aligns with our mission to address some of the most pressing challenges in healthcare.” For Evernorth, this move is as much about growth as it is about building connections—both with its workforce and the community.

    A nationwide search for talent

While Hyderabad serves as the hub, Evernorth’s recruitment drive is casting a wide net across India. Nearly 20 per cent of its new hires have relocated to Hyderabad, drawn by the company’s reputation and the opportunities it offers. Recruitment efforts are designed to attract professionals with expertise in areas such as software engineering, data analytics, and US healthcare systems.

Partnerships with specialist recruitment agencies are complemented by internal referral programmes, which account for 15 per cent of new hires. “Referrals come with built-in trust, and we incentivise employees for recommending top talent,” Nandikolla explains.

Looking ahead, Evernorth plans to start campus hiring in early 2025, forging partnerships with institutions such as Vardhaman College of Engineering. These collaborations will focus on equipping students with the skills needed for a rapidly evolving healthcare landscape, through initiatives such as hackathons and mentorship programmes.

    Growing together

For Evernorth, hiring is just the beginning. The company places a strong emphasis on employee development, with training programmes tailored to address individual needs. Regular surveys help shape a dynamic training calendar, ensuring employees are prepared for the challenges of their roles.

Cross-cultural training sessions, which focus on building effective collaboration between teams in India and the US, are a key part of the company’s learning strategy. “Understanding cultural nuances is critical to working effectively in a global team,” Nandikolla notes.

Programmes such as the upcoming boot camp for fresh graduates and the ‘Manager 101’ initiative for newcomers transitioning into leadership roles reflect Evernorth’s commitment to nurturing talent. These initiatives ensure that employees not only succeed in their roles but also grow alongside the organisation.

Creating a workplace that feels like home

Evernorth’s Hyderabad GCC is designed to be more than just a workplace. From the outset, employees are welcomed into an environment that prioritises connection and collaboration. The onboarding process includes personalised orientation sessions and mentoring programmes, helping new hires feel at home.

The centre itself, located at Sattva Knowledge Park, features modern facilities and wellness initiatives that underline the company’s focus on employee well-being. “Our goal is to create a space where people can thrive, both professionally and personally,” says Nandikolla.

Evernorth’s commitment to community engagement further strengthens its ties to the city. Health camps with Nirmaan and partnerships with United Way of Hyderabad reflect the company’s ethos of making a positive impact beyond its walls.

    Building a strong foundation

As the Hyderabad GCC grows, Evernorth is learning from its early experiences to fine-tune its approach. The company is mindful of the challenges that come with scaling operations, such as maintaining cultural cohesion and fostering innovation.

By blending innovation, inclusivity, and a focus on long-term growth, Evernorth is laying the groundwork for a strong and sustainable future. The Hyderabad GCC isn’t just about expanding operations; it’s about creating opportunities—for employees, for the community, and for the global healthcare industry.
