Germany has issued a whopping 80,000 work visas during the first half of 2024, according to a recent report by Schengen News. Half of these visas were allocated to skilled workers, marking a 3,000 increase from the previous year’s figures for the same period.
The Federal Foreign Office confirmed that these visas, granted between January and June of 2024, were primarily intended for employment purposes.
The surge in visa issuance is attributed to Germany’s labour shortages, particularly in skilled professions. The German Economic Institute (IW) confirmed that the country faced a significant workforce gap, with 5,70,000 positions remaining unfilled in 2023, impacting the nation’s economy.
Roles experiencing the most significant shortages include sectors such as transportation, manufacturing, construction, healthcare, engineering and information technology.
An additional study revealed that labour shortages will continue to escalate, with German Labour Minister Hubertus Heil indicating that seven million additional workers will be needed by 2035.
To address these issues, German authorities are set to introduce the Indian Skilled Worker strategy in upcoming German-Indian government consultations later this year. Furthermore, Germany is easing immigration rules to attract more skilled labour.
