Cognizant Technology Solutions has begun introducing a group of its executives to workforce-management tools, signalling a renewed emphasis on granular productivity tracking within specific projects. The move comes amid the company’s broader focus on operational efficiency and standardised work- measurement practices.
Over the past several weeks, Cognizant rolled out an internal training module explaining how these software tools monitors activity through mouse and keyboard interactions.
As outlined in the module, an employee may be marked “idle” if no activity is detected for five minutes, and “away from system” after 15 minutes of inactivity. These time thresholds may differ across teams, but the larger objective is to bring consistency to project-level activity tracking.
The training material, shared only with a limited set of employees, highlights how such tools can help capture work patterns, break durations, and time spent on various tasks. Similar software platforms are already widely used across the IT industry to track system time, analyse time spent on project-related resources, and identify workflow gaps. Cognizant has maintained that, for now, the data is not being used to assess individual performance.
These software tools are deployed globally by companies across sectors such as retail, real-estate services and technology, largely for improving workflow visibility and streamlining operations. For Cognizant, the software has already demonstrated measurable value. Previous reports indicate the company saved around $8 million in a single year by using the software, crediting gains in productivity, reduced process variation and better insight into workforce utilisation.
The latest familiarisation exercise points to Cognizant’s intent to strengthen project governance and efficiency, even as it works to refine how teams monitor effort and delivery across its vast operations.
