Abhishek Nair feels that Rs 3.6 lakhs per annum is a fair enough package for a fresher from a ‘tier 500 college’. He went on to post his opinion on social media, which has triggered a discussion on what a fair salary at the entry level should be.
Nair, who is an entrepreneur, feels that freshers from ‘tier 500’ colleges are not likely to be in possession of the specialised skills that justify a higher salary. According to him, they do not possess the programming skills that can command a higher package. Therefore, he clearly states that freshers from such colleges should not hope for a package of Rs 1 crore unless they are backed by an attractive resume or relevant portfolio. He does not mince words to convey that a bachelor’s degree alone is no good.
In his post he states that the low-tier colleges in India fail to give importance to skill development. Therefore, the students passing out from there are far from employable. He shares his personal experience of being unable to find even one suitable candidate from a lot of 500 hopefuls.
While many social-media users agree with Nair’s viewpoint and admit that this is a topic worth highlighting, there are others who feel that salary should be decided on the basis of a candidate’s potential and not their degree.
However, this looks like a debate that will not end anytime soon, just as the debate about long work hours. After all, freshers also face the challenges associated with inflation and rising living costs. They too have electricity bills and rent to pay and groceries to buy.
