The state cabinet of Telangana has decided to offer reservation under the economically weaker section (EWS) quota only to candidates who come from families earning a gross income of Rs 8 lakhs per year or less. The age limit for eligibility for state government jobs under the EWS quota has also been extended by five years.

Earlier, in February, the state government had issued orders providing 10 per cent reservation to the economically weaker section in educational institutions and in state government jobs, in line with the Centre’s provision. This reservation will be in addition to the prevailing 50 per cent reservation for those belonging to the scheduled caste (SC), scheduled tribe (ST), or other backward classes (OBC) categories that is already offered by the State governments.

Social security pensions in Telangana state will increase by 6.62 lakh as the state government has decided to reduce the age limit for old-age pension to 57. However, the pension will be available to only one member in a family. This will take the total number of social-security pensions to 58 lakh.

Additionally, the Cabinet has approved the waiver of farm loans up to Rs 50,000, which will bring relief to about six lakh farmers. Due to the pandemic-related financial situation, this waiver was done only up to Rs 25,000 in the last two years.
