In a recent earnings call,Sundar Pichai, CEO, Google, announced that more than a quarter of new code at Google is now generated by artificial intelligence. The move is empowering employees to work more efficiently.

This AI-generated code goes through thorough review and approval processes by engineers. It allows them to enhance productivity and focus on more complex tasks. Additionally, Google has integrated AI into its coding workflows, which is streamlining operations and boosting overall efficiency.

While the company has seen a workforce reduction over the past year, resulting in over 1,000 fewer employees than in 2023, Google remains committed to its employees’ growth and success. Pichai noted that Google’s comprehensive AI strategy, bolstered by a strong infrastructure and talented research teams, positions the company to thrive in the evolving AI landscape.

Moreover, improvements in machine costs per search query, enabled by the AI Overview application, are helping employees work smarter by providing AI-generated summaries with critical information and links. Over the past 18 months, Google has achieved more than a 90 per cent reduction in costs for these queries through innovations in hardware and engineering, while also doubling the capacity of its custom Gemini model developed by Google DeepMind.

The rollout of AI Overviews to over 100 new countries and territories is expanding access to more than a billion users each month, demonstrating Google’s commitment to enhancing user experience and employee productivity.

Looking ahead, the company is developing Project Astra, an initiative aimed at creating AI experiences that enable technology to understand and interact with the surrounding environment, with a launch expected in 2025. This focus on innovative AI solutions underscores Google’s commitment to supporting its employees as they navigate the future of work.
