Google rejects candidate for being too good, sparks debate

A Delhi-based software engineer working at Google has recently gained widespread attention on social media after sharing a surprising job rejection. Annu Sharma had applied for a position outside her current role but was turned down. The reason for the rejection was not a lack of qualifications, but rather that she was considered “too good” for the job.

In a post shared on X, Sharma included a screenshot of the recruiter’s response, which explained the reasoning behind the rejection. The recruiter stated that the role required someone with specific qualifications, but after reviewing Sharma’s resume, her credentials were found to be significantly beyond what the job demanded.

The recruiter went on to explain that individuals with higher qualifications often feel unfulfilled in such roles. These individuals also tend to leave shortly after joining, a pattern the company wanted to avoid.

Despite the lighthearted responses, many users could relate to Sharma’s situation. Some shared similar experiences of being overqualified for roles and being offered different positions as a result. One user recounted the story of someone who applied for an entry-level position after years of experience but was later offered a senior role.

Others appreciated the recruiter’s transparency, with some users noting that it was refreshing to see such honesty in a rejection. Sharma’s post has since gone viral, sparking a broader conversation about how companies manage overqualification and the challenges of hiring for roles that require a specific skill set. While opinions vary, it’s clear that the story of being “rejected for being too good” has resonated with many across the internet.
