Apple is all set to lay off dozens of engineers and project managers associated with its self-driving car project, Project Titan. Engineers and their managers are the ones likely to lose their jobs. In fact, it is reported that of the total 190 who will be losing their jobs, 33 will be hardware engineers, 22 software engineers and 31 product design engineers. An additional 46 include project managers and software development managers.

The layoffs, which will affect the offices in Santa Clara and Sunnyvale will come into effect in mid-April. These layoffs will reportedly be permanent and all those losing their jobs have been informed of the same.

The Project Titan has been disturbed due to various directional and management changes in the last five years. Despite all its efforts, it has not been able to outdo Waymo in the self-driving cars space.

However, Apple has been continuing with testing in California and had logged almost 80,000 miles of testing last year, which was a lot more than the thousand miles of testing it logged in 2017.

These layoffs are said to be the first significant overhauling in the Project Titan since Doug Field, returned to Apple in 2018 to take on the responsibilities of vice president, special projects after a brief tenure with Tesla, the electric car manufacturer.
