Involuntary attrition on the other hand, has been on the rise, because of performance-based assessments

Despite layoffs, the attrition rate at Infosys seems to have been checked. The annualised attrition in Q3 at the Indian multinational information technology company was 19.6 per cent, whereas it was about 23.4 per cent in the first quarter and 21.7 per cent in the second quarter.   Since the standalone attrition was 17.6 per cent, it indicates that about two per cent of the employees were laid off, while the rest (15.6 per cent) had left voluntarily.

Involuntary attrition had risen to 1.4 per cent for the September 2019 quarter.  These employees were asked to leave on the basis of their poor performance. These were employees who were unable to perform despite the Company’s attempts at reskilling them.

The present workforce strength is about 2.43 lakh. Of the 19.4 per cent attrition rate reported last quarter, about 18 per cent was voluntary, while 1.4 per cent was involuntary.

According to Infosys, every quarter, there is an attrition of an average of about 8000.

It is felt that the Company has now started enjoying the fruits of its employee-engagement related initiatives and the steps taken towards career progression. Of late, the Company has started enhancing the pace of promotions and also offered faster career options in the US. It has also rolled out milestone-based increments to ensure that the good quality talent stays on.

In India alone, Infosys had recruited about 12000 people not long ago, of which 7000 were picked from the campuses. In the second quarter itself, a total of 14000 employees were hired. For the June quarter, the total hiring stood at 8000.
