Cauvery News, the television channel owned by Cauvery Power, Tamil Nadu, is going to close down. Except for a small eight-member digital team, the remaining 146 employees of the channel have been promised a month’s salary, and have been told look for other jobs. . The management conveyed this sudden and shocking news to the employees in a meeting and cited lack of funds as the reason behind the decision.

With media houses across the country having slowed down hiring, the employees of Cauvery News are planning to get together and meet with the management to demand a better financial settlement. They feel that a month’s salary is not enough compensation to take care of their financial needs till they land another job, which could take months.

Employees are not only angry at the suddenness of the action, but at the fact that the channel had recently hired people. They are right to think that a financial crisis does not occur overnight, and if the channel was aware that things were not going well, they should not have hired fresh candidates, who could have easily joined other media houses instead of facing joblessness after joining here.

According to the management of the channel, help from investors is being sought to take care of the present requirements, but production will have to be completely stopped till that happens. Also, it was conveyed that even if an investor was found, it cannot be said with certainty that the current employees will be retained.

It is reported that the Channel did not provide any information pertaining to severance to the employees at the time of joining. In fact, it is said that except for a joining letter, the employees were not given any other document by way of contract or appointment.
