The Board of Deans (BoD) of Nagpur University (NU) recently decided to hire 107 teachers on contract for 11 months, on a salary of Rs 24000/- per month.
The practice of hiring teachers on contract, for various departments and colleges of NU, was started last year and met with considerable success. The previous session saw 92 teachers being recruited on contract. This year, the number has been increased by another 15, to cater to 40 departments and colleges of NU, which together have about 250 vacancies.
However, the proposal has yet to receive the approval of the Academic Council (AC), without which it will not be implemented. The approval is expected to be received on 4 June at the regular meeting of the Council.
Unlike the last session, this year, only applicants with PhD and NET/SET will be considered.
A majority of the new hires will be appointed in various new departments, such as biotechnology, genetic engineering, travel & tourism, commerce and molecular biology, which had no sanctioned posts earlier. Also, with many teachers having retired in the chemistry department, a significant number of the new recruits will be appointed there.
The University pays the salaries of these contractual teachers from its general funds. The University hopes that with the new teachers in place, it will achieve good grades during the National Assessment and Accreditation Council’s (NAAC) visit scheduled to take place at the end of the year.
