HR glitch sends termination emails to entire company — including the CEO

An HR software mishap has gone viral after an entire company, including its CEO, received sudden “termination” emails due to a test gone wrong.

According to a Reddit post on the sub-Reddit r/Wellthatsucks, a social- media user revealed that their HR department was trialing a new offboarding automation tool designed to streamline employee exit processes. However, in a major blunder, the team reportedly forgot to disable the “live” mode. As a result, every employee—around 300 in total—was notified that their employment had ended “effective immediately.”

The mass email, which began with the line “Your last working day is effective immediately,” instantly triggered chaos across the company. Slack channels were flooded with confusion and panic, as one manager reportedly asked, “Should I start packing?”

Realising the blunder, the IT department scrambled to contain the damage, posting an all-caps clarification: “NO ONE IS FIRED. PLEASE DO NOT TURN IN YOUR BADGES.”

The bizarre incident quickly gained traction online, drawing over 36,000 upvotes and thousands of comments. Users flooded the thread with a mix of humour, empathy and disbelief. Some shared their own layoff stories, while others criticised the over-reliance on automated HR systems.

One commenter joked that any company needing a tool to mass-fire employees was “doomed to fail,” while another quipped that they would’ve simply “thumbs-upped the message and started packing.”

Though the company in question wasn’t named, the viral post has reignited online discussions about the risks of automation in HR processes — especially when “test mode” mistakes can send an entire office into panic mode.
