A Bengaluru-based IndiGo employee has filed a police complaint accusing three senior colleagues of caste-based harassment during a company meeting held in Gurugram. Fuelling concerns over workplace discrimination, the case has now been registered as a First Information Report (FIR) at DLF Phase 1 police station in Gurugram.
IndiGo reacted by denying the accusations and issuing a statement to this effect.
The airline emphasised its zero-tolerance policy toward discrimination and harassment, stating it will cooperate with law- enforcement authorities if required. The company reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining an inclusive and respectful work environment.
In his complaint, the 35-year-old employee has alleged that he was subjected to casteist remarks by his colleagues on many occasions. One incident he thought was rather serious when on 28 April occurring during a meeting on April 28 he was at the receiving end of some offensive comments.
The employee, who belongs to the Scheduled Caste Adi Dravida community, claimed that discriminatory remarks were targetted at him in the presence of others.
In his FIR he presents details of various instances of workplace bias. He claimed to have received warning letters with no basis; had faced pay cuts, and even had his sick leave and travel privileges withheld without any justification. He also mentions how he was time and again pressurised to resign.
His complaints to the company’s ethics committee and CEO had been ignored.
The incident came to light after a zero FIR was initially filed in Bengaluru and later transferred to the Gurugram police jurisdiction for investigation.
Investigations are reportedly underway and appropriate legal action will also be taken according to the findings.
At a time when cases of employer I sensitivity are becoming rampant, this case is likely to trigger discussions pertaining to workplace inclusivity, grievance redressal, and anti-discrimination practices in India Inc.
