There were reports in the media that the Central Government has made changes under the Employees’ Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions (EPF and MP) Act, such that, establishments with 10 or more employees will be covered under this act.
But the Central Government has denied the same. The statement says, “Ministry of Labour and Employment denies the media reports published in some newspapers that the applicability threshold has been brought down from present establishment with 20 or more employees to 10 or more employees for the purpose of application of Employees Provident Fund and Miscellaneous Provisions Act 1952 (EPF & MP Act).”
The statement clearly clarifies that there is no change in the threshold but according to the new rules which are applicable from 1st January, 2020, business which have 10 or more employees can voluntarily join the EPF and MP act.
The instructions are given on the official website of EPFO.
