The Government of Jammu & Kashmir, through the Power Development Department, has scheduled a crucial meeting on 5 February, 2025, in the Civil Secretariat, Jammu. The high-level meeting will focus on significant reforms in the state’s power sector, particularly the privatisation of power distribution.
In anticipation of the privatisation move, the Jammu and Kashmir Power Employees Coordination Committee (JKPECC) has announced a state-wide protest on 4 February. The committee is urging all Power Department employees, including those from the Power Distribution Lines (PDL) staff, to join the demonstration.
The protest aims to highlight concerns over job security and the potential impact of privatisation on their future prospects. The move reflects growing apprehension among employees about the proposed changes and their possible implications.
An official order dated 31 January, 2025, outlines the meeting’s agenda. Topics of discussion include the status of the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), the progress of hydropower projects, power tariff collection, and the transmission sector’s Transmission-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) projects.
Additionally, the meeting will review ongoing power-sector reforms, including the privatisation process and the introduction of an Internet of Things (IoT)-based system to monitor power availability and consumption.
