Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has announced plans to introduce a temporary work permit system at every Gram Panchayat Unit (GPU). The initiative aims to regulate the employment of external workers while safeguarding local interests. It will help manage workforce deployment, ensure fair employment practices, and control the influx of workers from outside the state.
The decision was made during the 4th edition of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) legislators’ meeting held at Samman Bhawan in Gangtok.
A key concern discussed was the unauthorised entry of individuals into villages and towns. To tackle this, the government will enforce stricter workforce monitoring, including the new work permit system. Another issue raised was the illegal subletting of trade licenses. The leadership pledged to curb this practice and prioritise employment for local residents. The government aims to boost skill development and create more job opportunities for Sikkimese citizens.
Cleanliness and hygiene across the state were also highlighted. Departments were directed to prioritise maintaining cleanliness in public spaces and government offices as part of the state’s broader development agenda.
Furthermore, the establishment of a State Planning and Development Board was discussed. This board will oversee financial planning and monitor developmental projects at the state level. Additionally, constituency-level boards will be set up to focus on localised development needs.
The meeting concluded with a commitment from all members to work for the people of Sikkim. The leadership pledged to ensure that government initiatives reach every corner of the state, driving progress in line with public aspirations.
