The Government of Tamil Nadu has significantly enhanced the education advance provided to children of government employees. The financial support has been doubled from the upcoming academic year 2025-26. The objective is to lighten the financial burden of government staff and supporting access to higher education.
According to a recent order issued by the state’s finance department, the education advance for professional programmes has been increased from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh. For students pursuing arts, science, or polytechnic courses, the amount has been raised from Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000. Employees across all service groups—Group A, B, C, and D will benefit from this move.
The revised advance will cover the actual education expenses, including tuition and other associated fees for the academic year. The decision aligns with an earlier announcement made by Chief Minister MK Stalin in the state Assembly.
As per existing guidelines, if both parents are government employees, only one can avail of the benefit for a child in a given academic year. The advance is sanctioned annually, and a new application is not approved unless the previous advance has been fully repaid.
The education advance will continue to be free of interest. Repayment will be deducted from the employee’s salary in ten equal monthly instalments, beginning the month after the advance is drawn.
This hike in educational support reflects the state’s commitment to promoting higher education among children of public servants.
