Tata Steel has announced a bold target to achieve a 20 per cent diverse workforce across all group operations by 2028. The move proves that the company is committed to workplace inclusion under the umbrella of its long-standing MOSAIC initiative.
Launched a decade ago, in 2015, MOSAIC is Tata Steel’s diversity and inclusion programme dedicated to ensuring equity in the company’s culture. The initiative focuses on creating a work environment where individuals—regardless of background, gender, sexual orientation, ability, or social identity—feel valued, respected and empowered to bring their best to work.
The five core pillars on which MOSAIC stands are: recruitment, sensitisation, retention and development, infrastructure, and celebration. These pillars support a range of inclusion efforts targetted at women, persons with disabilities (PwDs), LGBTQIA+ individuals, and members of affirmative action groups.
Tata Steel has introduced a series of progressive HR policies to support this vision. These include equal benefits for LGBTQIA+ partners, gender-neutral parental leave, and assistance for employees undergoing gender transition. The company also provides inclusive relocation and travel policies to make transitions easier for diverse employees.
Several standout initiatives have emerged from MOSAIC. These include the Women of Mettle scholarship for engineering students, the onboarding of transgender operators for heavy earth-moving equipment at company mines, and the Queerious case study competition, designed specifically for LGBTQIA+ students. In 2023, the company expanded its outreach by launching Ananta Quest, a platform for students with disabilities, and training the first cohort of female firefighter trainees.
With the 2028 goal, Tata Steel is trying to reshape workplace norms in traditionally male-dominated industries. By focusing on inclusive hiring, supportive infrastructure, and awareness-driven programmes, the company is building a fully diverse and future-ready workforce.
