Starting 15 November 2024, Joydeep Dasgupta has assumed charge as director (production), National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC), which is a Schedule ‘A’ Government of India Enterprise with Navratna status under the Ministry of Steel.

Backed by more than three decades of experience, Dasgupta served as executive director (mines) at Steel Authority of India’s (SAIL) Jharkhand Group of Mines under the Bokaro Steel Plant. There, he successfully led critical initiatives in system strengthening and ISO audits, and executed the capacity expansion projects.

An electrical engineering graduate from BIT-Sindri, Dasgupta began his career as a management trainee (technical) in the raw materials division of SAIL, way back in 1991. He has also served as the chief executive officer of the International Coal Ventures (ICVL). During his tenure there, he supervised the mining operations in Mozambique, overseeing the export of coking coal and thermal coal to SAIL as well as Rashtriya Ispat Nigam (RINL), the Indian promoter companies. He was responsible for optimising global resources and coal-supply chains for India.

Joydeep Dasgupta has been trained at SVAI Linz, Leoben, Donawitz and Eisenerz, in Austria and also at the Advanced Global Techno-Management Programme at ESCP, Paris. He has had the opportunity to be the Indian representative in delegations to Russia and the Far East Siberia, looking into alternative coking coal and pulverised coal injection (PCI) supplies for Indian steel plants.

In this latest assignment at NMDC, Joydeep Dasgupta is expected to use his expertise to help the company achieve a target of 100 MnT of iron ore production over the next five odd years without losing focus on sustainability.
