IndiGo has appointed Vikram Singh Mehta as the chairman of its board. Mehta takes over from Venkataramani Sumantran whose five-year term as board member just came to an end, having begun in May of 2022.
Equipped with two master’s degrees—in politics and economics—from Oxford University and Tufts University, Vikram Singh Mehta served as an IAS officer for two years before entering the corporate world.
Backed by decades of experience, Mehta was earlier chairman of the Shell Group of Companies in India and the chief executive officer of Shell Markets and Shell Chemicals, Egypt.
He has been a member of the board at Larsen & Toubro (L&T), Colgate Palmolive (India), as well as Mahindra & Mahindra.
Since May of 2022, Mehta has been a member of InterGlobe Aviation, the parent company of IndiGo.
IndiGo acknowledges the contributions of outgoing chairman, Sumantran, in leading the airline’s recovery and transformation after the pandemic-related slump.
IndiGo now looks to Vikram Singh Mehta’s guidance in continuing its growth story. In 2010, Asia House recognised Mehta as the ‘Businessman of the Year’, while in 2016, Asia Centre for Corporate Governance and Sustainability named Mehta ‘Best Independent Director’ in India.
