Bringing Diwali cheer to the state government employees of Uttar Pradesh, the chief minister’s office announced on social media that Rs 6,908 will be paid as bonus to each staff member for FY 2021-22. That is not all, the dearness allowance (DA) has also been hiked by four per cent.

Now Uttar Pradesh government employees will enjoy 38 per cent dearness allowance compared to the earlier 34 per cent.

While this move will benefit 15 lakh employees, this hike in DA will increase the financial pressure on the State government by Rs 296 crore per month. About eight lakh teachers and 12 lakh pensioners will also enjoy the benefits of this announcement.

The bonus payment will put an additional burden of Rs 1022 crore on the State’s finances. Of this, an amount of Rs 639 crore will be distributed in cash, while about Rs 383 crore will be deposited in the general provident fund (GPF) of the employees.

In August, the Madhya Pradesh government announced a DA hike for its over 7.5 lakh employees, from 31 to 34 per cent. Pensioners will also benefit from this hike. The implementation of this move will put an additional burden of Rs 625 crore on the Madhya Pradesh government. The objective of the hike was to bring the DA of state government employees at par with that of Central government staff.

In January this year, the Odisha government had increased the DA of government employees and pensioners by three per cent, bringing it up to 31 per cent.
