In a notice dated 13 April,2022 the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) has directed employees of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) to not share any photographs and videos related to the facilities of DAE and its offices on social media platforms, such as Facebook or Twitter.

The circular, ‘Use of Social Media Platforms’, signed by George Antony, the registrar, says that it has been noticed that DAE staff and their family members are sharing photographs and videos of DAE facilities on social-media platforms, and sharing them on messenger apps, such as WhattsApp.

The circular has directed all the DAE staff and their family members to refrain from sharing any pictures of the Institute’s facilities or residential areas on social media as it can compromise security.

Further, the notice also mentioned that some disgruntled employees are sharing anti-government posts on social media, which is not right. The circular has asked employees to refrain from uploading or sharing any anti-government post on social media and should also warn their family members against doing so.

A comment shared by Antony with the media says that the wordings of the new directives by the Institute have been wrongly perceived by the media. He clarified that these are not new rules and that the Institute was only trying to remind all staff of the existing rules.

Antony’s statement did not mention anything about the directives of the Institute on prohibiting staff on sharing anti-government posts on social media.
