The BrihanMumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) on Tuesday made a statement in favour of the deceased where a compensation amount of Rs. 50lakh will be provided to the kind of their deceased employee and the closest relative will also be provided with job opportunity.

But this scheme is only applicable if the deceased employee was infected with coronavirus during last 15 days of his working and passed away while reporting to work.

The management has slated this time period of 15 days because all those employees who have not been able report to work, even their families are beginning to claim jobs and compensations.

Under this provision the officials in BEST has provided jobs to nine kin as of now.

“There have been instances of families of employees approaching the management who have lost their lives but have not reported on duty since the lifting of lockdown. There have also been instances of no proof that the employees succumbed while being on duty. This is why the head of departments have been asked to check on the employee’s attendance of the last 15 days.” said a senior BEST official who was not in favor of disclosing his identity.

In association with Sanyukt Kamgar Kruti Samiti (BKKS), an umbrella body of BEST unions, few employees have even been organising silent protest outside BEST bus depots in the city against the management. The union is demanding creation of a temporary COVID hospital for BEST employees

A few of them have faced disciplinary action and charge sheets have also been issued by administration against them for not reporting to work.
