Union Cabinet has approved the payment of Productivity Linked Bonus (PLB) equivalent to 78 days’ wages for the financial year 2017-18 for all eligible non-gazetted Railway employees excluding the Railway Protection Force (RPF/RPSF) personnel. The total financial implication of 78 days’ PLB to railway employees is estimated to be Rs.2044.31 crore.

The concept of PLB payments was introduced for the first time in the year 1979-80 and railways was the first government department to do it. PLB was primarily introduced to increase the share of railways in the Indian economy and keep the railway employees motivated to enhance the overall performance of the department.

It is generally disbursed before the Dusshera Puja holidays and the decision of the cabinet will be implemented at the same time, this year as well.

The wage calculated for payment of PLB to the eligible non-gazetted railway employees is Rs.7000 per month and the amount payable per eligible railway employee is Rs.17,951 for 78 days. About 11.91 lakh non-gazetted railway employees are likely to benefit from the decision.
