In a recent development, Tesla has shut down its office in San Mateo, California, and has reportedly laid off about 200 employees. The team at the San Mateo office worked on the autopilot systems and technologies at Tesla.
It has been reported that amongst the ranks of people who have lost their jobs are supervisors, data analysts and labelers. All the employees laid off in this round were hired on hourly wages. Most of the laid off employees worked on the data annotation of autopilots systems.
The San Mateo office had about 275 employees and the remaining chunk of people will move to a new location. Tesla has another office in Buffalo, New York, where another team of autopilots system developers sits.
There are speculations about another round of lay off. Elon Musk, CEO, Tesla has already said that the company has done a far bit of over hiring in the last two years and he does not have a very good feeling about the market in the coming days. He said that he would look to cut more than three per cent of head count at Tesla. Currently Tesla employs a little more than 99000 employees globally.
