Air India has suspended Rohit Bhasin, regional director-East, as he had allegedly stolen a wallet from a duty-free shop at the Sydney Airport. Bhasin was one of the commanding shoplifted pilots of the Air India flight that was to leave Sydney Airport on 22 June.

Bhasin was officially suspended the moment the flight landed at Delhi airport. Not only was he barred from entering the Air India premises without a written permission from the management, but was also asked to give up his identity card and all related documents.

He has been ordered not to leave Kolkata, which is his station, without seeking a written consent from the management. He will not be allowed to take up any other occupation either. Also, he will receive only the subsistence allowance that are allowed as per the Company rules.

According to Air India, the organisation is very particular when it comes to inappropriate conduct or improproper behaviour. It expects its staff to conduct themselves properly at all times, and has a zero tolerance policy towards misconduct of any level.

Sanjay Mishra, general manager (commercial), eastern region, has been assigned all the duties of Bhasin. Mishra will now shoulder the responsibilities of regional director, eastern region, in addition to his own duties.

The suspension order was served to Bhasin after his act of shoplifting was reported by the regional manager, Australasia.
