Social media company, Facebook, launched its new Boston office in Kendall Square, Cambridge, Massachusetts yesterday. With a present staff strength of 200, the Company plans to triple the headcount, in the coming years.

According to site leader, Laney Zamore, the Company wishes to focus on recruiting, educating and training local talent from the universities and start-ups.

Facebook Boston has partnered with Roxbury Community College and Bunker Hill Community College to reach out to fresh talent in area and plans to offer face-to-face training programmes as well as online digital marketing training.

The theme of the new office revolves a lot around Boston — its landmarks and even its music— and has interesting titles for its rooms, café and other spaces based on all that this city is known for. Covering an area of 130,000 square feet, it offers open-style workspaces, micro-kitchens, a spacious cafeteria and huge windows that provide a grand view of the area.

Earlier, the Boston office focussed primarily on translation of programmes into machine code, networking, cybersecurity, and data storage. However, now, it has forayed into artificial intelligence, data science, connectivity, and location services, such as Nearby Friends, Find Wi-Fi, Blood Donation, and Safety Check. Its data and location services teams are also involved in obtaining permits for gathering data in keeping with the online privacy laws. In addition, the staff comprises teams that handle data warehousing, data infrastructure, and machine learning.
