The management of Tata Motors held a two-day workshop for the officials of its union on leadership. This is the first time that an organisation has conducted such a leadership workshop for its union officials.
On the concluding day, many senior officials of the Company were present to address the participants. The workshop also emphasised on team work, which is integral to the smooth functioning of any union.
Such workshops should become a common practice in Indian industry, so that trade union leaders become familiar with the latest trends in industrial relations and at the same time, hone their leadership skills. It is important for trade unions to understand their role in the economic and political scenario of the country at large. Trade union leaders should be well aware of labour laws and the changes that have taken place in them in recent times.
It is a good idea to educate trade union leaders about globalisation and industrial relations issues, and to make them aware of various leadership styles.
