Following the creation of 1,50,000 direct jobs within a span of two and a half years, the Apple ecosystem is now pivoting towards addressing the residential needs of factory workers. The initiative aims to erect more than 78,000 housing units, with Tamil Nadu slated to receive the lion’s share of 58,000 units.
The initiative specifically aims to bolster efficiency and provide security, particularly for migrant women employees, a significant portion of whom belong to the 19-24 age bracket. Presently, most employees reside in rented accommodations and endure lengthy bus commutes to reach their workplaces. Officials highlighted that given the substantial representation of women in the workforce, this arrangement also raises security concerns.
Furthermore, it is said that the company is drawing inspiration from the industrial housing models observed in China and Vietnam.
According to government sources, Apple’s contract manufacturers and suppliers, including Foxconn, Tata and Salcomp, are actively engaged in developing accommodation facilities for their workforce. These housing projects are being executed through a collaborative effort between the public and private sectors, marking a significant milestone as the largest private-sector endeavour of its kind.
The state with the maximum share of units, Tamil Nadu, is spearheading the construction of the majority of these housing units, with contributions also coming from the Tata Group and SPR India, as reported by ET.
Furthermore, the Central government is also anticipated to contribute 10-15 per cent of the funding, while the remainder will be sourced from state governments and private entrepreneurs. The construction and handover of these accommodations to the private sector are to be completed within the current fiscal year, ending on 31 March,, 2025.
