Tesla’s VP-people quits, joins Handshake as chief legal officer

Valarie Caspers, VP-people at Tesla, has moved on and joined Handshake — a job- search platform for college students — as chief legal officer. Casper is regarded as a strong HR leader and an advocate of diversity at the workplace. She had a four-year long tenure with Tesla and worked with the company in various roles.

Caspers joined Tesla in 2018 as associate general counsel, compliance. She was involved in designing the compliance programme update, including creation and leadership of the corporate compliance group.

She also served as a leader for North America HR as well as EMEA and Asia Pacific, and was part of the COVID-response team. With a successful professional career of more than two decades behind her, Caspers has worked extensively in the area of marketing, compliance, government relations and HR.

In the initial part of her career, she spent time as a marketing professional working with companies such as Lincoln Centre as director- marketing and creative services.

In 2001 she joined KPMG US as its national manager-HR policies and procedures, where she spent more than five years. Later, she joined Wyndham Hotels and Resorts leading its compliance and legal admin teams as VP, compliance and government relations.

Before joining Tesla, Caspers spent two years each at Realogy Holdings and FOCUS Brands as VP, franchise compliance and VP-legal, respectively.

A communications graduate, Caspers also holds a master’s degree in law.
