The policy is expected to provide a new direction to the Indian education system.
Talking about the recently launched programme, SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds), Irani said that teachers from centrally-funded institutions, such as IITs, IIMs and central universities, will offer online courses.
The programme will have more than 80 diploma courses, which will be offered for free. However, a small fee will be charged for a certificate.
Of late, the Indian Government has been encouraging skill-based education at all levels, especially in the higher education sector. According to experts, skill nurtured in an interdisciplinary environment can respond to society’s demands in a much efficient manner than a simple technician.
