Amazon Canada is organising its second virtual refugee career day on Thursday, 3 November 2022, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. PDT (1 p.m. to 5 p.m. EDT). This is part of Amazon’s ongoing refugee-support programme, which was launched in June this year.
The virtual programme will help refugees in Canada to learn about job opportunities at Amazon and help them get in touch with the recruiters to explore opportunities.
Similar to last time, virtual booths will be set up by Amazon. Participants will be able to enter the booths and explore the job listing at Amazon in technical and non-technical roles. They will be able to learn about available vacancies in the HR department as well as the fulfilment centres.
The event will livestream presentations on interviews at Amazon, resume writing, and employee benefits. An affinity network and Immigration Question booth will enlighten people on how to navigate the immigration process and discuss the support offered by Amazon.
The first Refugee Career Day helped about 119 refugees who got support from 50 Amazon employees. “I had the opportunity to help candidates with one of the most important tools in their career-development toolbox: ‘How to write an effective resume’, which allows them to put their best foot forward before they appear for an interview somewhere. We hope to replicate that experience with this second virtual event,” shares Catherine Fontaine, senior sourcing recruiter, People eXperience and Technology team, Amazon.
In addition to the Refugee Career Day at Amazon, the Company has also decided to launch a new employee resource group called The Refugee and Newcomer to Canada Network, in January 2023. The affinity group will help Amazon create a sense of inclusion amongst the refugee talent and further attract and retain such talent in the company. The group will focus on recruitment efforts domestically and globally, community events and fundraising. It will provide access to professional- development opportunities for employees. By announcing the launch of this affinity group, Amazon has recognised the significance of refugee talent for the success of the company.
“The inspiration for creating this group stems from some of the day-to-day concerns that refugees face when starting a new job in Canada,” says Bellal Faroqi, a strategy specialist for immigration support at Amazon Canada and founder of the Refugee and Newcomer Amazon Canada Network.
“These issues include immigration support, resettlement into a new community, and adapting to the Canadian and Amazon culture. The affinity group will address these concerns and allow Amazonians to support newcomers and refugees while providing a sense of community of new Canadians within Amazon,” he adds.
