Just when we were scared that artificial intelligence (AI) would take away jobs, we were pacified by experts saying that AI will only ease work and create more jobs. Hardly had we begun to relax and here comes a video where Reid Hoffman, co-founder, LinkedIn predicts that in a decade’s time the regular nine to five jobs will vanish for good.
Given that Hoffman’s predictions have been fairly accurate in the past, this video shared by Neal Taparia, an angel investor and entrepreneur, on social media, may be a cause for concern.
Hoffman believes that AI will affect traditional jobs in a big way; that more workers will go for gigs or take up freelance work than a permanent job with a steady income. People will prefer to work on contract with different companies and even different industries or sectors. This may not provide security, but will offer more flexibility to workers and a wider range of options.
However, this is good news for gig workers and freelancers, who may actually end up earning much more than those with permanent jobs, if Hoffman’s prediction comes true.
It was Hoffman who had predicted that social networks would transform the world. And we all know how that happened. He was also one of the earliest ones to believe in the sharing economy, which is why he invested in Airbnb. He saw the AI revolution coming well before ChatGPT made its appearance, way back in the 1990s. And we all know how ChatGPT has taken over innumerable jobs.
