India’s unemployment rate has continued to climb steadily month after month, despite the Government’s increased investment in creating jobs. In March, the rate reached 7.8 per cent, prompting the Government to take action. In the last budget before the Lok Sabha polls, the Centre approved a 33 per cent increase in the budget meant for generating more employment opportunities.
With 1.2 crore Indians becoming eligible for employment every year, Prime Minister Modi will be offering 71,000 appointment letters to new recruits, while participating via video conferencing, during a Rozgar Mela, or employment fair. The new government employees will include train managers, station masters, ticket clerks, constables, inspectors, sub-inspectors, income tax inspectors, postal assistants, accountants, librarians and teachers.
The Rozgar Melas, which have been held across India, have been described by PM Modi as catalysts for job creation in the coming years. In addition to the Rozgar Mela campaign, the Government has launched an initiative to upskill government employees by providing them with access to online training.
The goal of the Rozgar Mela campaign, which was launched in October 2022, is to provide ten lakh government jobs. PM Modi’s efforts to create more employment opportunities come at a crucial time as the country grapples with the rising unemployment rate and a surge in COVID-19 cases.
