Microsoft has recently made headlines for laying off 559 employees from its offices in Bellevue and Redmond, Washington. The announcement was made by the Washington State Employment Security Department, and it was reported that the cuts mainly affected employees in Microsoft’s security operations.
In the Seattle area alone, the company has terminated 2,743 employees, bringing the total number of job cuts to 10,000.
This is not the first time that Microsoft has announced layoffs this year. Earlier this year, the company had already announced a reduction of its overall workforce by 10,000 jobs through the end of the third quarter of FY23. The previous layoffs impacted workers in the supply chain, artificial intelligence, and Internet of Things divisions.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella had stated that the company would be making changes that would result in the reduction of its overall workforce by 10,000 jobs. This reduction is equivalent to around 5 percent of Microsoft’s total workforce of over 220,000 employees. It’s important to note that these layoffs were not unexpected, given the company’s plans to realign its cost structure with its revenue.
In January it was announced that the recent job cuts are part of an effort to save the company’s cost and manage the revenue according to a Microsoft spokesperson.
