Amid the changing shift towards Generative AI (GenAI), Duolingo has made significant changes to its workforce. The language-learning app has recently cut 10 per cent roles moving towards GenAI for creating content for its app.
The decision follows the CEO’s earlier declaration that the company is increasingly depending on generative AI for content development. A spokesperson for the company informed Bloomberg, that they now require fewer individuals to perform tasks that some of these contractors were handling.
In November, the company also revealed that the company is leveraging generative AI technology to expedite the production of text, speech and images. This technology is instrumental in creating new content, including scripts for language-teaching shows, at a significantly accelerated pace. Additionally, Duolingo is using AI to generate voices within the app.
According to company filings, Duolingo had 600 full-time employees at end of 2022.
A former Duolingo contractor shared on Reddit that the company had terminated a substantial number of positions. The contractor revealed that in December 2023, a significant percentage of translators, who were previously contractors, were let go as Duolingo recognised the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of utilising AI for translations.
The decision was driven by the realisation that AI can complete these translations much faster, saving them costs in the process.
Contrary to speculation, a Duolingo spokesperson clarified that the job reduction is not indicative of employees being replaced by AI technology. The company’s full-time employees and contractors already incorporate technology into their workflow, and the reduction is not a direct consequence of AI implementation. The spokesperson emphasised that none of the full-time employees were affected by the cutback.
