Government of Delhi has asked all the heads of departments to ensure that all contractual employees receive their festive bonus. It has directed that the bonus be paid by the respective contractors of the employees. As per the information received by the Labour Department, many employees who are engaged with the Delhi government in contractual jobs, working in different departments, have complained of non-payment of festive bonus.
As per the Payment of Bonus Act, 1965, all contractors who have employed 20 or more employees at any time of the financial year, are required to pay bonus to their employees or workers. In a circular sent out by the Labour Department, all contractors have been urged to disburse the payment of all Diwali bonuses. Non-compliance can lead to serious consequences mentioned the circular.
After these orders issued by the Labour Department on October 14, PWD officials sent out a communication asking all their officials to make sure that the contractors paid the festive bonus to all contract employees as advised by the Labour Department and the guidelines issued by it.
As of now, the Central government has not announced any bonus for its contractual employees but all its permanent employees will receive Diwali bonus. In fact, the Union cabinet announced a more than Rs 3 crore package as festive bonus to give a push to spending.
