Discarding conventional hiring methods, information technology (IT) firms in Kerala are going for tests suited to the modern digital era, to gauge the suitability of candidates. These tests help identify candidates who are actually capable of keeping pace with emerging technology.
No longer are candidates selected or shortlisted on the basis of their score in their engineering course, or their performance in written examinations and interviews. The new hiring model will see candidates solving real-world problems and challenges before they reach the interview stage to bag jobs in software companies in Kerala.
The new hiring process was unveiled and discussed at Launchpad Kerala 2024, the talent-acquisition programme that lasted a month. It was organised by the Kerala Section of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and Group of Technology Companies (GTech) across the state.
This pilot edition will see participation of more than 10,000 engineering students who will be made to undertake some tasks meant to improve their problem-solving capabilities, technical skills and adaptability to secure jobs offered by the various tech, IT and multinational firms across the state.
As per the organisers, given the rapid digitisation and the pace at which artificial intelligence (AI) is taking over, companies worldwide should be embracing the new model of hiring.
Job fairs are also scheduled to take place on 6, 8 and 10 May, at IT Parks in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode, respectively, where the new hiring model will be put to test.
