Over a lakh scholarships will be given to help developers enhance their skills and employability in emerging technologies.

Google has partnered with Pluralsight and Udacity to train 1.3 lakh developers and students in India. The aim is to create  a highly skilled tech workforce in India, by providing them scholarships. Pluralsight is a technology-learning platform, whereas Udacity is an educational institution.

The search engine giant is sponsoring 1,00,000 scholarships in the Pluralsight platform and 30,000 scholarships on the Udacity platform. This scholarship will help developers gain access to advanced learning curricula and enhance their employability in emerging technologies, such as mobile and web development, machine learning, AR/VR, artificial intelligence, and cloud platforms.

The scholarship programme is divided into two phases. In the first phase, there is free access to Udacity courses in mobile and web development with mentorship and community support. Then the top 1,000 students earn an additional six-month scholarship to mobile and web developer nanodegree programmes, which include mentorship, community support, and expert project reviews.

Ishan Gupta, managing director of Udacity India said that “With this scholarship programme, students can master web and mobile development skills with the experts from Udacity and Google.”

Earlier, Google had announced its skilling initiative in India, aimed at training two million developers to help in innovation and growth of the startup ecosystem in the country. India is the second largest developer ecosystem in the world and is slated to overtake the US by 2021.

William Florance, developer products group and skilling lead for India, Google said “Since we announced our skilling initiative in India, 210,000 students have completed Google-developed courses on Udacity, with 117,000 students completing the course this year. To build on this momentum, this scholarship programme will make it easy for students and developers to gain the skills they need to be successful in the changing technology landscape.”

Google claims to have trained over a thousand faculty across 400 colleges and 11 state universities for the technologies of the future, which has already benefited 75,000 students since last year.

Commenting on the partnership with Google, Arun Rajamani, country head and general manager, Pluralsight said, “We are thrilled to partner with Google to help developers across India understand their skill level using Pluralsight IQ and advance their skill sets in four key roles: android developer, mobile web specialist, cloud architect and data engineer.”
