Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, has announced the Rail Kaushal Vikas Yojana (RKVY). Under this programme, the Railway Ministry is going to train 50,000 youth over the next three years. In the first batch of the programme, 1000 youth will be trained in industry-relevant skills from the railway training Institutes. These youngsters will be trained to be electricians, welders, machinists and fitters. Participants who will be trained under this scheme will age between 18 to 35.

The curriculum of this programme will be designed by Banaras Locomotive Works, the nodal production unit of this scheme. The Unit will also develop a standardised assessment process and maintain a centralised database of participants.

The participants will be given 100 hours of training in 75 railway training institutes shortlisted around the world.

As per Vaishnaw, the institutes will invite applications for the training programme and people will be shortlisted on the basis of the marks obtained in matriculation. However, he also cautioned that participants should not seek any employment opportunities in Railways only on the basis of this training.

The training will be available even for people in the remotest areas of the country. Vaishnaw also believes that the imparted skills through this programme are very relevant in the age of electronics.

The RKVY programme will contribute to the mission of Atmanirbhar Bharat and is also a part of the series of initiatives under the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.
