Google is making headlines for its weak commitment to inclusivity at the workplace. One of its Black employees has claimed that he was stopped by security officials of the Company as they refused to believe that he was an employee of the Company!

African-American Harvard graduate, Angel Onuoha, who is a product manager at Google’s Mountain View, California office, tweeted that he was riding his bike around the Google campus when security guards pulled him over.

Onuoha took to Twitter saying: “Riding my bike around Google’s campus and somebody called security on me because they didn’t believe I was an employee. Had to get escorted by two security guards to verify my ID badge.” The tweet went viral in no time. He reveals how his ID badge was taken away from him and he was told to check with the security if he had issues with it. His tweet further reveals that he was held for 30 minutes by the security officials.

Following his tweet going viral, many former and existing google employees went public with similar experiences.

This comes close on the heels of Google reporting that 2020 had been one of its best years in terms of ensuring racial inclusivity in hiring, with 8.8 per cent of its US hires being “Black+”. However, only 4.4 per cent of its US workforce is “Black+” according to the Company’s recent diversity, equity and inclusion report. Google had previously stated that its aims to double its Black+ employee strength by 2025.
