Is Alibaba hiring or firing people? The latest news is that the Chinese e-commerce platform is preparing to hire people for six primary divisions. A total of 15,000 hires are expected, of which 3,000 would be university graduates.

So, what about the layoff news? The company has reportedly brushed aside the layoff news as rumours and claims that employees are only moving on as is normal everywhere.

Only a day or two ago, Alibaba had made headlines for announcing workforce reduction by seven per cent, which would affect the cloud division the most, as reported by Bloomberg. This decision was supposed to be a part of a restructuring exercise aimed at preparing the cloud division for an independent spinoff, which would eventually lead to an initial public offering (IPO).

The whole exercise was to be spread over a span of one year with the company notifying the workforce about job cuts.

In fact, there were reports that Alibaba had even started discussing the process of severance pay and was considering transferring some employees to other divisions.

The e-commerce giant it reportedly preparing for a six-way split of its operations, in a bid to adapt slower growth under heavy and close regulatory scrutiny of the Chinese technology industry. Alibaba Cloud, is one of the biggest divisions of the company, and it will join the Cainiao logistics division and international commerce to obtain independent fundraising and potential listings.
