Swiggy to hire 3 lakh delivery personnel in 18 months

Looks like Swiggy is all set to become one of the largest employers in the private sector, similar to the Army and the Indian Railways. It will reportedly be hiring almost three lakh delivery personnel within a year and a half. This will take its workforce strength to five lakh.

Right now, the country’s online food ordering and delivery platform has a workforce strength of about 8000. As its delivery partners are not on the direct payroll of the Company, they do not receive provident fund and other standard benefits.

In September, the Government released a draft that proposed social-security benefits for those who worked in the unorganised sector. Swiggy, which was last valued at $3.3 billion, has spread to 500 cities in India and is handling about 500 million orders annually.

In Bengaluru, Swiggy is gearing up to launch ‘pods’, wherein many restaurants will be able to use a single common kitchen. As a result, at least 8 to 10 popular brands can be accessed by 99 per cent of its customers in just 10 minutes. The objective is to allow 100 million consumers to transact about15 times a month in the next 10 to 15 years.

With the launch of Swiggy Access, Swiggy has been able to expand its cloud kitchen business. Here, its functional kitchens cater to online orders alone, and offer no option to dine in. As a result, there is a significant saving in terms of operating cost per meal.
