After hiring about 41,000 people to meet the demands of holiday shoppers, Macy’s is gearing up to hire 38,000 this year for the holiday season. This year, hiring will be lower than usual. In fact, it is reported to be lowest in the last 15 years. The growth in holiday sales in the US is expected to be rather slow. The American departmental store had hired about 71,000 people in 2021 to deal with the surge in demand during this period.

The fall in hiring is attributed to the increase in labour costs and fall in consumer spending. People are being very careful with their budgets and expenses as savings have shrunk amidst economic uncertainty.

The fresh hires will be deployed at the distribution centres as well as the Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury stores across the US.

Macy’s is not the only one looking to expand in preparation for the holiday season. Last week, Geodis, a global logistics provider, also announced its intentions to hire almost 3,000 seasonal workers across its operations in the US and Canada in preparation for the demand surge in the upcoming holiday season. It is looking to add more people to its teams at the warehouses and distribution centres. It is on the lookout for material handlers and equipment operators for its 13 centres in the US and Canada. Not only is it offering flexibility wherever possible, but is open to taking on part-time as well as full-time workers.
