The commencement of the New Year 2024 has brought about a sense of enthusiasm and excitement. There are promising indications for Central government employees as the authorities contemplate providing them with two notable benefits this year. According to some media sources, the Central government is considering an increase in dearness allowance (DA) and house rent allowance (HRA) for all government employees.
As of now, Central government employees receive a dearness allowance at a rate of 46 percent. It is speculated that the Centre may raise the DA by four per cent, bringing the total to 50 per cent. If both the DA and HRA witness a hike, it will result in a substantial salary increase for Central government employees.
If the proposed DA hike materialises, it is expected to take effect from January 2024, and the official announcement is anticipated before the festival of Holi in 2024.
It is peetinent to mention here that the HRA amount varies depending on the city of residence, and only those employees residing in rented accommodation are eligible for HRA. For instance, individuals residing in tier-1 cities would receive a higher HRA compared to their counterparts in tier-II or tier-III cities.
Typically, the DA rate undergoes revision twice a year, specifically in January and July, based on the semi-annual data of the AICPI index. In the year 2023, a cumulative 8 per cent increase in DA was implemented. Presently, Central government employees are anticipating a hike of four per cent or more in DA.
