‘Rs 132 crore BSNL revival plan a waste,’ say employees

Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) has engaged the services of Boston Consulting Group (BCG) to help transform it into a profitable company. However, the employees’ union of the state-owned public-sector undertaking feels that it is a waste to invest Rs 132 crore into a revival plan when even Deloitte and KPGM could not help improve its condition.

According to the BSNL Employees Union (BSNLEU), despite implementing the changes recommended by consultants such as Deloitte and KPMG in the past, the condition of the telecom has only gone from bad to worse. In fact, the BSNLEU has written to PK Purwar, CMD, BSNL that the telecom service provider will have to embrace emerging technologies to be able to offer better customer experience. The Union is of the opinion that sales will not improve without developing marketing strategies that keep pace with the changing market dynamics and growing competition from private service providers.

The Union believes that spending crores on seeking advice from BCG—on ways to save costs, increase revenue and enhance customer experience—will not get BSNL anywhere until the company focuses on expanding its networks using the latest technologies.

It is clear that BSNL is in dire need of upgradation. It requires latest 4G equipment from quality global suppliers for transformation, for which it is not being given permission.

The Union members are also urging the management to make optimal use of existing talent in the workforce instead of relying on outsourced talent, which is unnecessary waste of money and resources.
