Amazon on a hiring spree, will add 75,000 more jobs

Amazon has revealed plans to hire 75,000 more workers to help tackle the surge in online ordering amidst the pandemic, the world over. After recently adding 100,000 people to its workforce in March, the Company is now all set to expand its staff further, and is looking for more warehouse staff, shoppers and delivery drivers. The warehouse staff will be required to service orders, which entails selection, packing and sorting of items. These workers are paid $15 per hour.

Shoppers at Amazon’s Whole Foods are required to select and pack grocery orders for delivery. They enjoy flexible hours and are paid a minimum of $15 per hour. Delivery personnel, on the other hand, are required to drive the Company’s van full-time for a third-party company, to facilitate delivery of packages for 40 hours every week.

Amazon’s recruiting process is completed in a week’s time, and it is inviting applications from people in the hospitality space, who have lost their jobs or have been furloughed due to the pandemic.

Last month, when Amazon had revealed its plans to hire 100,000 personnel, it had also shared its intention to invest $350 million to hike the pay of its workers by $2 per hour during the coronavirus pandemic. It is estimated that with the increased hiring, Amazon will end up spending more than $500 million on increased wages.

To be able to deal with the spike in demand, Amazon has, for the time being, stopped accepting new grocery-delivery customers. It has also informed its vendors that it will be suspending shipment of non-essential goods for a short while, so that medicines and household essentials can be delivered on priority.
